The recreational line motors will have a higher rated output, but the duty cycle is assumed to be lower; IE, only intermiitent operation at WOT. All have been great engines, but are not fail proof.

A friend has the same motors as me in the newer by 1 year version that are rated at hp.My Yanmar 3GM30F tach is acting up. It sometimes works, but it always slow to move, that is, when I rev the engine up it takes a good minute or so to register the increased rpm. The tach does not work off the alternator, it has a pickup on the flywheel. How can I check whether its the pickup or the tach itself? Any ideas? Mine did the same. I wiggled the wire where it attaches at the flywheel and it's been behaving for 2 years since.

Your tach is part of the winding of your alternator. I'd guess it's either a simple wiring problem check the connections as was mentioned above or it might be a loose fan belt.

If it's the latter, it's really loose and about to fall off, so get on it! Nor is it a loose fan belt. I have removed and cleaned the wire to the pickup sensor, as previously suggested, to no avail. I may just buy a pickup sensor since its cheaper than the tach itself. But I was hoping to learn how to test it or the tach itself. The diesel tach on Burnsy's boat has never worked either. We just figured the feed from from the alt was bad since the alternator never worked. The tach still didn't work after we replaced the alternator, so I checked continuity on the wire that feeds the signal to the tach.

So, are they good? I believe so. They should certainly have the same or greater lifespan that a gasoline engine would, almost certainly longer, but shorter than those "one cu in per hp" diesel engines of yesterday. That 1 for 1 ratio is an important one. Below that, an engine will last longer than it takes granite to turn to sand.

Hmm, 6 knots at rpm sound way too low rpm is imho way too high. There is something wrong with you prop design. All Diesel engines have a optimum over the rpm range. Most diesel engines in boats are optimum between - rpm, as bigger the engine as lower the rpmin this range you should get about approx.

I normally run at rpm and speed is close to 7 kn. To me it sounds like you have the wrong prop. Have you tested max RPM? It could also be a wrong calibrated tacho. This requires that your LCD is still working. If needed you can replace it easy. Still trying to figure out which flexofold prop I have.

That pitch was to little, I coud run it up to rpm and then the limmitation went in. It was originally delivered with a 16x10 3L and that was behaving like you described, high RPM and low speed. I had FlexOFold making a prop calculation for that combination and they came up with 17x12 or 17x13 3L.
